The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
